Forgiveness

2 min read
What is forgiveness?  Is it a rug to sweep offenses under?  To pretend they never occured or claim that they didn't hurt nearly as bad as it did?  Is forgiveness what you give to a person who continuously abuses you, and then lets the abuse continue?

No.

That is not what forgiveness is.  Not in the slightest.

To NOT forgive is to keep the offense in mind, for whenever you can use it to assault others, a sheathed hatchet ready to be used.

However, to act as a miser over gold will not help, and will only cultivate a grudge which cloaks the good things in life.  A grudge is a bitter a weight and chain to those whom hoard it, forever weighing them down and sapping their strength.

Forgiveness is not a rug.  It is not watering down the offense, claiming it wasn't so bad.

Forgiveness is to let the offense, the bitterness, the grudge, go and free yourself from their heavy weight.  To forgive is not to forget injustices done, but to move past it and not let it continue pulling you down.  To forgive is to set yourself free.

Things happen, and people will hurt us because the world is a broken place.

To forgive makes you stronger than the damage inflicted, but it does not mean things return to the way they were.

It happened, and you have the emotional wounds to prove it.  Just because you forgive someone does not mean you must let the offender close, as they were before.

You don't have to let them close again.  You don't have to rekindle your friendship with them.

Forgiveness is freedom.  What happens after is your choice.
